Escaping the Pitfalls of Leadership

This is an interactive Thinking Coach Insight.

Here are the top 10 pitfalls of leadership in the area of soft skills that The Thinking Coach has encountered in the many leadership training seminars conducted around the world. These are not written in any particular order and we thought to invite you to rank them from 1 to 10 where 1 represents the greatest pitfall and 10 has the least impact.

You can reply with your selection to elih@thethinkingcoach.com. We will compile the results and send them to you in our next TCI.

You are also welcome to add your own to the top 10 list along with your rating of them.

There are many more leadership traps that can be written of; we chose those that we experienced to have the most impact on morale and productivity.

  • Assuming that as a leader one is better than others who work for them

  • Using threat as a tool of control, causing fear in people and making workers feel insecure by not providing adequate space (safety) for mmaking mistakes

  • Being controlled by the fear of loosing the leadership position which results in keeping other people down and preventing growth opportunities

  • Being political - spreading negative emotional and mental viruses about people behind their back

  • Lacking warmth- treating people as commodities and not providing the humanity that makes others feel included, recognized and inspired to be at their best

  • Being too open to personal problems of employees and therefore compromising one’s abilities to lead

  • Being too emotional in the leadership style and therefore lacking assertiveness where and when needed

  • Not communicating expectations clearly while having high expectations

  • Not having a clear leadership criteria and therefore vacillating between being too hard and being too soft

  • Having an ego because of past successes and neglecting to develop updated leadership skills - being locked in the past
