Change: Can You Manage It or Does It Manage You?
It’ not about Change- It is about how you think and handle Change!
Change is a fact of life that we all have to live with. It is the new paradigm of doing business and it happens all the time, faster and faster!
The core questions are: How do you as a professional in the business world handle Change? Does your attitude and way of thinking facilitate Change or oppose it? Are you able to use it as opportunity for growth or does it weigh you down?
My experience in dealing with professionals world-wide is that very often they try to handle new changes with old ways of thinking, which cause unnecessary stress and conflicts.
So how can you handle changes with the least amount of stress?
Here is a 5-step system that can help you handle changes:
Step1- Learn to accept Change, don’t fear it!
Include it in your mind as an element that is always there and make space for it rather then pretending that it is not there.
Step 2- Consider now first and move backwards, never the other way around
What that means is, develop the mind set of not assuming that “what was will always be”- Learn to seek for the facts of any circumstance and don’ judge prematurely (Pre-judgment is an expensive mind luxury that you cannot afford).
Step 3- The “people” factor- People Are Agents Of Change- they can be your greatest asset or worst liability if you don’ take them seriously
This is where change has its greatest influence. Find out, without bias, how people think now, what is important to them, how they are affected by the vast technology advancement, by new recruits, what makes them feel insecure, what they fear and what are their most pressing needs- Demonstrate interest and listen carefully!
Step 4- Think out of the box… about everything
The box holds inside it yesterday’s ideas, ways, means and solutions- most of them may well be irrelevant.
Step 5- Develop deliberate insecurity about what you think you are sure of and re-examine you decision making process- The right kind of insecurity is a catalyst for growth!
This 5-step system will get you on the road to effective Change Management, although the practical application of this system requires professional help.
